Find the quarterback before interpreting the play

Alignment is a starting point for watching.

The historical context

The NFL’s introductory formation diagrams help a new viewer identify common player alignments. Use them as a vocabulary guide before watching a historical game. First locate the ball, the centre and the player receiving the snap. Then record what is visible rather than immediately assigning a complex tactical explanation to the formation.

A clearer way to read the evidence

A diagram illustrates a role; it does not establish the exact assignment on a particular archived play. Watch what changes after the snap and note where the footage does not show the whole field. Keeping identification separate from interpretation makes your notes useful to another viewer and reduces the temptation to turn a familiar-looking alignment into a confident claim about the play call.

Keep in your notes

  • Locate the ball and snap.
  • Record visible alignment.
  • Keep uncertain assignments labelled.
