Read a football rulebook as a historical source

A rule needs the edition that was in force.

The historical context

A current rulebook explains today’s game, while an older game belongs to the rules and interpretations of its own time. The NFL Record & Fact Book provides a historical chronology that can help identify changes. Before applying a modern explanation to a classic contest, establish the year and the relevant rule context.

A clearer way to read the evidence

Keep the rule’s wording, its date and your explanation separate in research notes. A later summary may describe a change more briefly than the original documentation. If the exact interpretation matters to an argument, seek the appropriate dated source. This prevents a familiar modern assumption from silently becoming the standard by which an earlier play is judged.

Keep in your notes

  • Identify the game year.
  • Find the dated rule context.
  • Separate text from interpretation.
