Football eras

Separate season years from calendar dates

A championship can belong to one season and occur in another year.

The historical context

Historical football records often organise events by season, while a game report gives a calendar date. Both can be correct, but they answer different questions. A chronology should make the distinction explicit so that a championship reference and a dated account do not appear to contradict each other unnecessarily.

A clearer way to read the evidence

Keep a season field and a full-date field in your notes. Use the official team timeline or league record to reconcile the event, then retain the wording used by the original source. This small discipline helps with captions, archive searches and cross-references. It also stops a writer from correcting an accurate season label simply because the game was played after New Year.

Keep in your notes

  • Record season and full date.
  • Reconcile the event identity.
  • Keep original source wording visible.
