Check how a passing leader was defined

The label can outlive the method behind it.

The historical context

The Hall of Fame’s account of passer rating describes changes in the methods used to identify passing leaders. This is a reminder to check how an historical table defines its heading. A phrase that looks familiar can refer to a different calculation or qualification rule in another period.

A clearer way to read the evidence

Preserve the source’s definition with your transcription. If two tables use different methods, explain the difference before ranking their entries together. Do not silently replace an older definition with a modern one. A comparison becomes easier to assess when the reader knows whether its labels represent the same measurement, a related measurement or an editorial grouping you created.

Keep in your notes

  • Read the table’s definition.
  • Retain qualification rules.
  • Explain changes in method.
