Separate a season table from career totals

The scope of a number belongs in its label.

The historical context

A player biography may combine a season highlight with a total covering many years and teams. Those figures can both be useful if their scope is clear. Before comparing entries, check whether the table refers to a single season, one club, a complete career or a specific competition phase.

A clearer way to read the evidence

Create separate fields rather than using one generic statistics column for everything. Keep the source’s categories and note any explicit exclusions. If a total seems inconsistent with another source, investigate scope before assuming an error. A carefully labelled record prevents the reader from accidentally comparing one player’s season with another player’s entire career.

Keep in your notes

  • Label season, club and career scope.
  • Keep competition phases distinct.
  • Check scope before resolving differences.
